Episode 4: SonReal “Parachute”
SonReal is a multi-talented artist that truly uses every last weapon in his arsenal.
One minute, he’s putting out mixtapes and showcasing his skills as a rapper and hip-hop artist, and the next, he’s just as easily strumming an acoustic guitar and singing more alternative-inspired songs about love, life and loss.
He’s also as funny as he is heartfelt, and he draws in thousands of views with an active social media presence on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
When SonReal - who’s given name is Aaron Hoffman - recorded his episodes of The District Sessions in 2019, he was an artist in transition, both personally and professionally.
Since the release of his debut full-length album two years prior, he had tragically lost his father, but he’d also experienced the joy of marriage, tying the knot with his his partner Sheena and receiving the news they where expecting their first child.
All of this was happening as he was prepping his second album, The Aaron LP, which dropped in the spring of 2019 via Black Box Music.

While speaking with Rob Reinhart on an episode of Acoustic Cafe, the British Columbia born-singer explained how his personal ups and downs had drastically affected his songwriting since his last release.
“You can’t write those [personal] songs from anywhere, you have to go through things,” he told Reinhart. “Things like that are where my strongest songs come from - From loss, from pain, from joy, true love, happiness. Those are the things I draw from all the time.”
“I have to feel it so deeply now to write about things,” he concluded.
Just last week, SonReal released a new single, “Bank on Me,” which is available for streaming now on Spotify, Apple Music, and a slew of other services.
True to form, the rapper/singer also went all-out for the song’s music video, which can be viewed here.
