Episode 2: Jade Bird - “Lottery”

Jade Bird was born to sing.

So much so that one feels compelled to point to her last name as proof...though we’re sure that comparison has been drawn dozens of times before, so we’ll refrain.

Armed with her signature white guitar and a booming voice that explodes from her 5-foot-3 frame, Bird is the definition of a one-woman show - meaning that once she starts to perform, she grabs your attention and won’t let go.

At 23-years-old, the British-born artist has already made her mark on the industry thanks to her unmistakable vocals, dynamic musicianship and emotionally-driven songwriting with themes that span from romance to heartbreak to loneliness.

Inevitably, Bird has been likened to fellow powerhouse singer/songwriters such as Alanis Morissette, Kate Bush and Tori Amos - fair and flattering comparisons to be sure, considering Bird has said she’s been inspired by all three.

Still, Jade Bird is most definitely a unique and successful artist in her own right.

Her self-titled debut album dropped in 2019 to commercial and critical praise, and she was named International Breakthrough Artist at the AIM Independent Music Awards that same year.

Lottery,” the album’s first single, can be seen above in Episode 2 of The District Sessions.

While speaking to Rob Reinhart on an episode of Acoustic Cafe, Bird explained that she prefers to write her songs alone, as some of her favorite lyrics tend to come from her most personal experiences.

“It’s far more interesting for my own recordings if I write by myself,” Bird told Reinhart. “It’s always going to be more interesting because it’s unfiltered, it’s uncensored.”

“I often find that songs reveal your subconscious,” she later added. “I just don’t think you should hide away from bad as well as good. It’s what a record is.”

Jade Bird’s latest single, “Open up the Heavens,” is out now, and can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and a variety of other streaming services

She’s also plotting a return to the stage this year, with a handful of tour dates already on her website.
