Episode 7: Kylee Phillips - “Song For Sam”
Kylee Phillips is a singer/songwriter from metro Detroit with serious talent.
Originally hailing from the Plymouth/Canton area, Phillips started singing and playing piano at the age of 6, and never looked back.
From early days gigging at the Plymouth Coffee Bean and performing at the Village Theatre in Canton, to becoming a headlining act in her own right, Kylee Phillips has experienced multiple roles within the music industry.
Her gorgeous, piano-driven ballads and impressive vocal range are reminiscent of Sara Bareilles — an artist whom Phillips has pointed to as a major influence.
But it’s Kylee’s songwriting that truly sets her apart from comparison, as she draws upon her personal experiences, spirituality, and relationships for lyrical inspiration.
When shutdowns due to COVID-19 virtually eliminated the possibility for live performances last year, Phillips and her husband Ben launched Menagerie Sound -- a music series that they run from their home studio and livestream via Instagram.
The series has featured performances from Phillips and her brother Sam Spade — also a singer/songwriter — as well as other Detroit-area artists, and has served as a way to “connect music makers and music lovers” during the pandemic.
Kylee was one of the first local artists to record her episodes of The District Sessions when the series began, and her performances never cease to blow us away.
